What is a sangeet night at an Indian wedding?

The word “Sangeet “ means music, but it translates to Musical party or Music night when the word is used to describe a celebratory event during an Indian wedding. Sangeet Ceremony is one of the most fun-filled and most awaited pre-wedding events at an Indian wedding. Traditionally the sangeet was a ‘ladies only’ affair on the bride’s side. The purpose of the “sangeet” is to unwind from the stress of marriage preparation with singing, dancing and music. But in modern times almost every wedding is now led by a sangeet night, where the people from the bride’s as well as the groom’s side perform to traditional, folk or Bollywood songs.

The bride’s family will host this night and is a time for introducing all member of the families. Traditionally this event used to take place mainly in north Indian weddings. But nowadays, the trend of Sangeet Ceremony is taking place in South Indian and Bengali marriages also.

What to expect at a Sangeet?

From dance performances to colourful and stylish outfits, a sangeet t is where the parties kick off. You can describe it as “the family talent show.” or relate it to a rehearsal dinner, but a lot more fun! The dance performances by relatives and friends of the Bride and Groom will display nice choreography and practice. Often, professional singers who sing favourite film songs along with traditional wedding songs usually perform at this all-important Indian pre-wedding function. Elaborate dining arrangements follow the songs and dance.
